CO-LEARN: COoperation in LEARNing
Introduction
CO-LEARN is a project concerned with Research & Development relating to problems of communications and cooperation between participants in the education process in a distance learning context.
Purpose
The purpose of CO-LEARN is to enhance communications between teachers and learners and between learners themselves by the development of a global communications system supporting on and off line tutoring, harnessing of the Personal Computer (PC) environment to interactive communications tools.
Output
On the basis of analysis of the communication processes in education and training and of existing equipment, the project will develop 4 communication systems for distance learning:
- A real-time multimedia conference system for communication in small groups,
- An asynchronous computer mediated conference system for communications in larger groups,
- A system for real time teleteaching where teachers can communicate with groups of learners in different locations,
- A system for real-time teleassistance where a tutor can guide a small group of learners.
Means
It is intended to identify basic pedagogical units in which the emphasis will be on communication or cooperation between participants in the education process. A focus will be made to recreate the conditions of these interchanges in a remote context.
The basic pedagogical units involved will be analyzed in terms of communication flows and conditions from which technical architectures will be derived to develop prototypes. Such prototypes will be assessed and evaluated in 13 trial schemes, half involving trans-European Networks in varieties of educational, operational and geographic situations.
In achieving the objectives key issues of: networks (Integrated Services Digital Network -ISDN- in particular), standards, multimedia (high quality sound, image and text), human factor engineering (What You See is What I See -WYSIWIS- multiwindowing concept), message handling, navigation through information, storage of complex media (case structures, exercises, user directories, etc), updating and transmission, must be addressed.
